Windows 10 1903 time to install free. Why does Windows 10 1903 take so long to install?

Most of the process of downloading and installing a feature update now takes place in the background. On my test systems, the download took up just over 3 GB of disk space, and after the preliminary installation work was complete I saw this notification.

Instead of scheduling a restart, I chose the Restart Now option and timed how long the final phase of installation took from start to finish fully signed in at the Windows desktop. On three systems equipped with SSDs as primary storage, the average time required was exactly 7 minutes. I was curious how much longer the update process would take on a system with a conventional hard drive instead of an SSD, so I reconfigured that old PC with the hard drive it originally shipped with and ran the test again.

This time, the final update took more than three times as long, requiring me to wait more than 17 minutes before I could get back to work. The background phase of the installation took much longer as well, with the system struggling to keep up as the hard disk chugged away while downloading and installing the new system image. Based on that experience, my recommendation for anyone who plans to install this feature update is to take advantage of that Restart Tonight option.

That's especially true if the target system is relatively old and slow. On a modern PC with an SSD as the primary system storage, you should be able to complete the update in about the time it takes to get a cup of coffee.

If you've already updated to version or , you can postpone that process for several months, at least. And given the history of recent feature updates, that might be the smartest strategy of all. If you're anticipating the next Windows 10 feature update with some trepidation, you're not alone. Here's what you can expect when version is ready. NET Foundation. June 5, Ars Technica. Im updating as soon as I get home this is probably the most exciting win 10 update due to winders sandbox mode. I have been beta testing since its conception. Used Update Assistant. Both began process of updating but eventually the SP5 had an error message.

It required ejecting the SD card and retrying. Surface Laptop 2 completed the install. I then checked Windows Update. Restart and W10 SP5 finished, restarted and had W10 On a Surface Pro 3, it wasn't showing up via updates. Decided to go through "Update Assistant". Put in a microSD card, it show up in File Explorer, but then quickly become not accessible. Checked for updates, some more came down, but non corrected the issue.

Sadly, I had to roll back. Lol, Update Assistant doesn't work in S Mode. My Surface Go stuck with I am afraid the October update fiasco has frightened Microsoft and forced them to be over cautious for this May update I guess you have to strip your pc out of all peripherals and external devices in order to have an error-free update!

Seems that way. I tried to manually update our HP desktop in the living room using the upgrade assistant Windows update shows no updates available. It went through the process of downloading the update and everything only to tell me that it won't let me update that PC to because it has an external USB hard drive attached.

It told me there is some kind of potential issue with the update process for and external hard drives that could cause an issue. It told me MS is aware of this and that as soon as they fix this problem and consider it safe that the PC will automatically get Seems pretty crazy to me that any PC with any external media plugged into it including flash drives which it mentioned specifically as well even though I did not have one plugged in is flagged to not get the update.

So I'll just wait and see when that PC eventually gets It's been fairly smooth sailing.
